Finest Moments
Conflicts are around the corner. In our own society, in the state, in politics, in public and private offices, in our beliefs, on the streets where most conflicts and arguments occur, in the restaurants, in our own homes. In marriages, in friendships, in relationships of whatever nature whether licit or illicit.
Most importantly in the courts of law, where battles of reasons are most displayed. A place where doubts/guilt and innocents are proved. In this area, words are fluid and triumphs are gained through arguments. It is by nature or so designed to be the venue where conflicts are settled…Winners are declared. At the heat of an argument, we will say everything to support our cause. We will quote the law, we will quote the Bible, we will quote unverifiable statistics, we will quote decisions made to convince and bring the argument in our favor. It is our nature. We thirst to win in every situation, we could hardly afford to lose even in oral arguments.
We are trained to support our causes and protect our own interests. We all desire to triumph and in one way or another, we want to lead and never want a second hand trying hard candidate but, a winner. We have different concepts on being a winner or having to win. We all longed to win - – -
Let’s take a look at this story and appreciate their definition of winning. A number of disabled children with varying abnormalities were involved in a hundred meter race. It was their sports fest program. They were lined and given instruction to run as fast as they could to reach the finish line. The first who reaches the line, shall be declared the winner and he will receive the cash and the trophy. The instructor did not fail in making the mechanics of the game understood. It was dramatized even the result of the game. The display of prestige and honor to anyone to generate enthusiasm among the contestants and to burn the passion in their hearts were finely executed. With their young and innocent minds, they have probably understood what it takes to win. Clear instructions were given and teachers have been summoned to ensure that instructions were fully understood.
Bang, the game signaled for the start. They did not ran instead, they walked, held each others hand and waited each other and ensured no one is left behind or one is ahead of the other. They have walked altogether in unison where no one could be declared a winner except all of them. Suddenly, one child within 5 inches near the finish line fell to the ground and bruised his legs so he cried bitterly leaving him behind their line. One of the contestants came back to support him to stand while the others looked on. No one has made a single step ahead instead, they patiently waited. When they could not wait for the child to stand up, they all came back to offer help. The crowd roared silently with disappointments however, waited what to happen next. Some of the viewers were impatient to know who shall be declared the winner however, left as they could not get through the whole show, some felt the children have defeated the purpose of the sport fest.
The children did not leave until the child is consoled and brought back to the line. Finally, with the help of his friends, the child stood up and they started to walk again down to the finish line. As they were walking, everyone felt the pride in their hearts that they have completed the race much more they have reached the line all together and they declared themselves the winners. The crowd saw a heart warming moment and a display of greatness beyond compare….they have never seen before and saw a value new to all of them. They stood up roaring with big applause.
It was sweet and tender, strong and marvelous display of support. Abnormal they may seem yet normal they have acted. They have displayed an act a normal child will have difficulty in delivering. What they displayed was indeed the true meaning of triumph…. the true essence of winning. You can not win by stepping ahead while one is left behind you. You can not win and be there on top while you look down to those whom you have left behind – - – instead, pull them up so they will be closed to you and somehow savor with you your finest moments.
The viewer maybe wrong in her judgment that the purpose of the contest was defeated. The purpose has actually reached more than it has planned. The occasion is rare and may not happen again but it has taught a lot of lessons to those who were part of the crowd.
Actions and demonstrations are much more powerful and meaningful as they happen right before our eyes – - -more than the words that we hear – - -
